The UN Convention on Combating Desertification (UNCCD) is an international agreement that combines the sustainability of land management and soil degradation issues with the environment. The convention focuses, among other things, on the restoration of degraded ecosystems in arid areas. The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), also known as the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit, the Rio Summit, the Rio Conference and the Earth Summit, was held in Rio de Janeiro from 3-14 June 1992. The conference was unprecedented and aimed to reassess economic development in order to preserve natural resources and discuss the problem of pollution.  The decision-making process was designed to promote a sustainable planet for future generations. The key message included the idea that behavioural changes could be the basis for progress towards desired transformation for the environment. The results of the two weeks of discussions and meetings focused on Agenda 21 (a non-binding UN action plan for the promotion of sustainable development), the declaration of forest principles, the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development and the following conventions: the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Un Convention on Combating Desertification (UNCCD) and the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CDD).
